Samsung Fridge Error 5E: Defrost Fault / Blocked Drain
Indicates a fault in the fridge's automatic defrost system: the defrost sensor isn't reading the correct temperature, or the drain tube is frozen or blocked, which eventually stops the unit cooling normally.
How to reset or clear this error:
Empty the freezer, unplug the Samsung fridge, and leave the doors open for 24 hours so all the evaporator ice melts. The 5E error clears once reconnected, provided the drain flows freely again.
Common symptoms:
- "5E" appears on the panel (sometimes alongside "22E")
- The fridge cools less and less over the following days
- Visible ice builds up on the rear wall of the compartment
Probable causes:
Meltwater can't reach the evaporation tray because the channel is frozen or blocked, and the built-up ice ends up jamming the sensor and fan.
The sensor that tells the control board when to stop the defrost cycle gives a wrong reading, letting ice build up unchecked.
If the heater that melts frost each cycle has stopped working, ice builds up progressively until it fully blocks the evaporator.
Safe Inspection Checklist (Check off when completed):
Move the most perishable food to a cooler box. Unplug the fridge from power and leave the doors open.
Lay towels on the floor to soak up water and leave the unit off with the doors open for at least 24 hours, so all the ice on the evaporator melts completely.
Plug the fridge back in and pour a glass of lukewarm water down the freezer's rear drain hole to confirm it flows freely to the compressor's evaporation tray.
If the 5E error comes back within a few days of a full 24-hour defrost, the defrost sensor or heater is faulty and needs technician replacement — repeatedly forcing cycles only wears the compressor out faster.
