Balay Washer Error E23: Motor or Spin Fault

Appears when the control board detects the motor is not turning at the expected speed or not responding correctly during the spin phase.

40 estimated minutes Complex

Common symptoms:

  • Clothes come out soaked because spinning did not happen
  • The drum does not turn, or turns jerkily with noise
  • E23 code on display at the end of the cycle

Probable causes:

Worn motor brushes 45%

The carbon brushes that contact the rotor have worn down with use, causing the motor to lose power or stall.

Loose or broken drive belt 30%

On belt-driven models, the belt has loosened or snapped, so the motor spins but the drum receives no movement.

Faulty motor tacho/electronic module 25%

The sensor that reports actual motor speed to the board fails, causing the electronics to cut the spin cycle for safety.

Safe Inspection Checklist (Check off when completed):

1. Unplug and turn the drum by hand

With the washer unplugged, open the door and turn the drum by hand; it should move smoothly without odd resistance or metallic noise.

2. Reset and test a short spin

Plug the washer back in and select a short spin-only program to check whether the motor starts and reaches speed.

3. Listen to and observe motor behavior

Watch for burning smells, sparks, or heavy friction noise from the rear; these are clear signs of an internal motor fault.

When to call a professional technician?

If the drum turns with difficulty by hand, there is a burning smell, or E23 repeats during the test spin, the brushes or motor module need technician replacement.
