Electrolux Dryer Error EF1: Thermal Limiter Tripped
The EF1 code indicates the safety thermal limiter has tripped because the dryer reached an excessive temperature, almost always due to restricted airflow.
Common symptoms:
- "EF1" is shown on the display and the cycle stops
- The drum suddenly stops turning and heating
- A hot or warm-plastic smell near the filter
Probable causes:
Accumulated lint blocks normal hot-air flow, causing the internal temperature to rise until the safety limiter trips.
The exhaust duct running outside is packed with lint accumulated over time or crushed behind the appliance, restricting airflow.
The safety component itself trips prematurely due to an internal fault, even with proper ventilation.
Safe Inspection Checklist (Check off when completed):
Turn off the dryer, unplug it, and leave the door open for at least 30 minutes before handling the filter or drum interior.
Remove all accumulated lint and wash the filter with warm water to clear fabric-softener residue clogging the mesh; let it dry completely.
Disconnect the vent hose from the back and check it isn't crushed, kinked, or blocked; clean it with a vacuum if needed.
If the filter and duct are clean but EF1 recurs across several cycles, the thermal limiter has likely been damaged by the overheating and should be replaced by a technician, along with the heating element if it was also affected.
