Whirlpool Fridge Error Er FF: Freezer Fan Fault
On Whirlpool combi or side-by-side fridges, Er FF indicates the fan that distributes cold air from the evaporator to the freezer compartment is not spinning correctly.
Common symptoms:
- Er FF appears on the outer or inner panel
- The freezer doesn't cool well while the fridge side works normally
- Rubbing or humming noise from the back of the freezer
Probable causes:
A previous defrost issue has left a layer of frost that rubs against or jams the fan located behind the freezer's rear panel.
The fan motor has reached the end of its service life and doesn't spin fast enough, or the internal bearing has dried out.
Vibration or handling while defrosting the rear panel may have partially disconnected the fan's wiring.
Safe Inspection Checklist (Check off when completed):
Empty the freezer, turn off the fridge, and leave the door open for 12-24 hours with towels absorbing the water, to clear ice built up behind the rear panel.
With the unit unplugged and defrosted, carefully remove the interior rear panel screws and check that the fan blades spin freely when nudged with a finger.
Reassemble the panel, plug the fridge back in, and watch whether the freezer regains temperature and Er FF clears over the following hours.
If the fan still won't spin after a full defrost, or makes a worn-bearing noise, the evaporator fan motor needs replacement by a technician.
