Miele Fridge Error F21: Ice-Making Fault

The F21 code (shown as 01_F21) on Miele fridges with an ice maker indicates the cubes aren't dropping correctly into the bin, usually due to a physical jam.

20 estimated minutes Moderate

Common symptoms:

  • "01_F21" or "F21" is shown on the panel
  • The ice maker stops producing cubes
  • Turning attempts are heard but no ice drops

Probable causes:

Clumped ice cubes blocking the outlet 55%

The accumulated ice has partially melted and refrozen into a solid block, jamming the ejection mechanism.

Ice maker switch off or misaligned 25%

The small switch under the touch panel was accidentally turned off while cleaning that area.

Ice maker motor or gear mechanism failed 20%

The mechanism ejecting cubes into the bin has worn out or broken and needs replacement.

Safe Inspection Checklist (Check off when completed):

1. Restart the ice maker

Find the ice maker's on/off switch (usually under the electronic panel or inside the compartment) and turn it off then on again.

2. Remove the jammed ice block

With the fridge switched off, remove the ice bin and, using your hands or a plastic spoon, carefully break up any compacted block preventing the mechanism from turning.

3. Confirm ice production resumes

Put the bin back and switch the maker on. Normal ice production can take up to 24 hours to resume.

When to call a professional technician?

If F21 keeps appearing after clearing the jammed ice and restarting the system, the maker's motor or gear is likely damaged and needs replacing, which usually requires a Miele technician.
