Hotpoint Fridge Error E8: Evaporator Sensor Fault
The E8 code on Hotpoint fridges points to a problem with the thermistor sensor on the evaporator, which manages the automatic defrost cycles.
Common symptoms:
- "E8" appears on the control panel
- Excessive ice buildup on the fridge's rear wall
- Irregular defrost cycles
Probable causes:
The sensor becomes coated in a layer of ice that distorts its actual temperature reading.
The component has failed internally or its connector has come loose, no longer sending a reliable signal.
If the evaporator never defrosts properly, the accumulated ice eventually affects the associated sensor too.

Empty the fridge, switch it off, and leave the door open for 24 hours so the ice built up on the evaporator fully melts, including any covering the sensor.
After defrosting, locate the sensor near the evaporator (behind the rear panel) and check its plug is firmly seated.
Plug the fridge back in and watch for 24 hours whether ice builds up again or the E8 code reappears.
